Guest Room Essentials

Preparing for holiday house guests often requires a mix of practicality and hospitality. Here's a list of seven things you should have on hand:

  1. Clean Linens and Towels: Ensure you have fresh sheets for the beds your guests will be using and ample clean towels and washcloths for the bathroom. It's always nice to have a few extra sets just in case.

  2. Basic Toiletries: Stock up the guest bathroom with essentials such as shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hand soap, toothpaste, and perhaps even a few new toothbrushes. Consider a basket of travel-sized items they might've forgotten, like razors or feminine hygiene products.

  3. Space for Their Belongings: Clear out a drawer or a section of the closet so they have a place to put their clothes and personal items. If possible, provide hangers and maybe even a luggage rack for suitcases.

  4. A Welcome Snack or Basket: After a potentially long journey, your guests might appreciate some refreshments. Consider offering a basket with bottled water, fruits, snacks, and maybe a local treat. If they're arriving late, they might also appreciate a light meal.

  5. Updated Household Info: If you have Wi-Fi, print out the password and place it in their room. It may also be helpful to have a list of any household quirks ("the bathroom door sticks, so give it a push"), emergency contact numbers, and perhaps recommendations for local attractions or eateries.

  6. Entertainment: If your guests are staying for a few days, having entertainment options can be a nice touch. Consider a stack of current magazines, some local travel guides, board games, or a list of streaming services they can use.

  7. Basic Breakfast Staples: Morning routines vary for everyone. Having some basic breakfast items ensures that your guests can start their day right, even if you're not up at the same time. Think about offering coffee, tea, milk, cereals, bread, butter, and some fruits.

Remember, the most important thing is to make your guests feel welcome and comfortable. A thoughtful gesture or personal touch can often mean more than any physical item you provide.
